nona cyan's review on Spielberg's MUNICH
Actually this movie should fall into Drama - comedy (hey, this sounds like a category in Golden Globe,or was it Musical - Comedy?)
Spielberg has tactfully placed some silly yet deep joke in some spots,so when I was in verge of tears,I laughed instead...Can't forget the radio joke..and the song was Al Green's "I'm so in Love with You"....What the *&^% a song from an AMERICAN PREACHER can bring peace to an Arab an A Jew (fighting over a radio channel)? This song also used as a background for one of the most intense conversation in the movie...between Eric Bana and "the Arab guy who looks like Enrique Iglesias".
Umm yea,I was also made some racist comment about Jews...especially when financial guy from MOSSAD keep saying,"I want to see the receipt". He got a point though, when he said "For everything you do,there's someone else who's paying for it".
Hence I can't help but wondering why on earth Steven Spielberg choose Eric Bana for the leading role. Bana is Ban-tastic for sure (ladies...bring a bucket,he is HOT in this movie and still looks damn cool in those 70's tight shirt and pants. O yea,i addition he cooks amazing dish) but he doesn't look Jewish at all. Zach Braff from "Scrubs" looks more Jewish and he can act as well. Well, turned out he was chosen because ...well you'll see in the movie.
The cinematography is a feast for eyes and John Williams's composition adds just nicely. GREAT art direction, wonder where the art director shops? Those clothes...cars...lamps..basically those COOL 70's props. Well-picked European locations also gives more vibes into this movie.
For some people this movie is just another attemp from Spielberg to demand justification over holocaust (i.e to promote Jewish heritage). After watching this movie, I surely DO NOT agree with this.
Instead of screaming "HEIL SEMIT",Spielberg is telling how humane a spy can be. The pressure is HARD on being one...and Bana had successfully potray that in a role. A (hella hunk) simple man with life-risking task..can be seriously frustrating. I can personally understand about him being paranoid and sleep inside the closet.
Should this movie win an Oscar? I vote for best pic,but haven't seen Capote nor Brokeback yet..so my vote is not yet final. Here's Bana and Rush arguing about who should finish the baclava. Specially for ladies, here's Bana in shades...
